Tutorial Math Program

Caribbean Community Association, Inc. (CCA): Tutorial Math Program

 Why?

CCA’s Tutorial Math Program came about because of the initiative of some members of our Education Committee who were teachers of mathematics in the formal school system in the Tampa Bay Area. Our team's main instrument for action, was the result of an international study on the achievement of U.S. students in mathematics at the elementary and secondary school levels, published in the St. Petersburg Times in 1998.

The article captioned "U.S. Students ranked at the bottom of the class" showed that American high school students, even many in advanced classes, to be among the industrial world's least prepared in science and mathematics; also, that our best students in math and science were not world-class.

Besides this international study, our team did further research at the local level. Based on the statistics on achievement, we realized that something more must be done in our society to address this level of attrition in mathematics, in a holistic approach to arrest school failure.

 What is it?

CCA’s Tutorial Math Program is an outreach program that is developed and designed to provide individualized instruction to students from Grades 3-12, who are experiencing challenges in all areas of mathematics.  We direct classes towards delivering remedial assistance when possible, as a first step in the process, then to promote high academic achievements. The emphasis is on preparing students for the SAT, PERT, PSAT & FSA Assessments. Students’ report cards over the years have shown the effectiveness of the program based on the student's progress.

The University of South Florida (USF), in partnership with CCA, has provided space for this project from September 2000 to September 2019.  Since September 2019, the Temple Terrace Methodist United Church has been the new home to the Tutorial Math Program. We hold classes on Saturdays from 9:00am-12:00pm during the Fall & Spring semesters.

Tutorial Staff: Teachers (Hillsborough, Pasco & Pinellas School Districts), USF students (College of Business, Mathematics & Engineering), and retired college mathematics professors assisting as volunteers.

 How is the program funded?

2000 to 2009: Sponsors included JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Community Foundation of Tampa Bay.

CCA continues to rely on repeated sponsorship from different organizations and individuals. The continued support humbles us and is much appreciated, because it keeps the program open to the community that we serve.

Due to the 'new normal' created by COVID-19 pandemic, CCA continues to support students by conducting virtual tutoring starting in the Fall of the 2020-2021 academic school year. CCA will continue to assess and monitor the situation as we proceed through the school year.
